Ferric ion has higher magnetic moment because of higher number of unpaired electrons.

Explanation-

Formula used for magnetic moment :

\mu=\sqrt{n(n+2)}

where,

\mu = magnetic moment

n = number of unpaired electronsThe metal is Fe and the electronic configuration of Fe is, 1s^22s^22p^63s^23p^63d^64s^2

a)  The oxidation state of Fe is +2 in ferrous ion, thus the configuration is:

Fe^{2+}:1s^22s^22p^63s^23p^63d^6

The number of unpaired electrons in Fe = 4

\mu=\sqrt{4(4+2)}=4.9BM

b) The oxidation state of Fe is +3 in ferric ion, thus the configuration is:

Fe^{2+}:1s^22s^22p^63s^23p^63d^5

The number of unpaired electrons in Fe = 5

\mu=\sqrt{5(5+2)}=5.9BM

Thus ferric ion has higher magnetic moment because of higher number of unpaired electrons.
