Na - atomic number-11
Electronic configuration- 2,8,1
Mg- atomic number -12
Electronic configuration-2,8,2
First ionisation enthalpy for Na is less,as it is easier to remove 1 electron from it's outermost shell.
For Mg also, it is easier to remove and electron
Electronic configuration when 1 electron is removed
Of Na -2,8
Of Mg- 2,8,1
Second ionisation enthalpy
Now to remove an electron from the outermost shell of Na we have to apply more energy as Na has attained a STABLE electronic configuration.
But to remove electron from the outermost shell of Mg not much energy is required. Thus Na has second higher ionisation enthalpy
