Answer

The bond order of peroxide ion is 1 whereas the bond order of superoxide ion is 1.5, so the peroxide ion has larger bond length as it has low bond order.

Explanation:

The bond order depends on the bond length, As the bond order decreases, the bond length increases in a molecule or ion.

Whereas bond strength or stability of the molecule or ion depends on the bond order. Bond order is directly proportional to the stability. The higher the bond order is, the higher the stability of the molecule or ion.

Superoxide ion is represented by (O2) -1. It has two (2) oxygen atoms with -1 charge.

Peroxide ion is represented by (O2)-2. It has two (2) oxygen atoms with -2 charge .

Considering No. of e in bonding and antibonding molecular orbitals, bond order of superoxide ion (O2)-1 is 6-3/2 =1.5 and bond order of peroxide ion (O2)-2 is 6-4/2 = 1.

So, the peroxide ion has larger bond length as it has low bond order.

I hope this will help you.
