It is the velocity and not the acceleration which gives the direction of motion of a body .When a body is projected upward, both its direction of motion and velocity in upward direction but the acceleration is in the downward direction.

→Velocity determines the direction of motion acceleration determines how is velocity changing. A body can move in upward direction when the body is imparted a velocity in upward direction despite of the fact that acceleration is acting downward. But we see that body moves upward instead of downward .
