The Vakatakas played an effective part in the political scenario of the Deccan for more than two and half centuries. This dynasty was laid by Vindyashakti , a brahmin in the last quarter of 3rd century BC.

He was succeeded by his son Pravarsena 1 who was solely responsible for the territorial expansion of Vakataka dynasty. He was great champion of Brahmanical religion and performed various Vedic sacrifice.

Parvarsena performed  the four Ashwamegha yagnas to establish his supremacy over other kingdoms and hence rose to be one of the most powerful rulers of his time.
