The First World War started as a local war in 1914 between Austria-Hungary and Serbia when a Serb assassinated Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary on June 28. Later 32 countries got involved in the war. Britain, France, Russia, Italy were known as the Allies. US joined the Allies on April 6, 1917. They fought against Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria who were known as the Central Powers.
