Heimlich maneuver should be used as a first-aid procedure to dislodge food or another object from a person’s airway when they are choking.

If person is choking and having trouble in breathing. Person may feel inability to talk, difficulty in breathing, cough, pale or bluish skin and lips, and loss in consciousness.

• Try to give them up to 5 back blows between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand.

• Try to give up to 5 abdominal thrusts by wrapping your arms around the waist.

• In case of obesity or pregnancy should perform the high abdominal thrusts by wrapping your arms from behind and positioning the hands at the base of breast bone.

• Alternate between 5 blows and 5 thrusts until the blockage is removed.

• Try to perform CPR if person is unconscious and food or object remains in the throat. Chest compression during CPR may help to dislodge the object.

Choking means sudden blockage of airway's because of foreign object getting  struck in our  wind pipe which blocks the flow of air.

This results in breathlessness.

If chocking occurs follow these steps :

Step 1:

If it is a mild chocking encourage the person to cough to clear the blockage.

If coughing does not works the first aid which should be tried is:

Step 2:

Five sharp Back Blows :

Ask the person to bend forward

Then use the heel of our hand to give up to five sharp back blows between their shoulder blades .

If Black blows does not work

Step 3:

Give Five abdominal thrusts.

Stand behind the person who is choking .

Place your arms around their waist and bend them forward.

Clench 1 fist and place it right above their belly button.

Put the other hand on top of your fist and pull sharply inwards and upwards.

repeat the same steps 4 more times

Step 4 :

If still choking continues call for medical help
