Great man theory is one of the earliest leadership theories. It claims that we can learn what makes a great leader from the biographies of great leaders. It claims that these leaders rise up to prominence in times of crisis and they are born that way rather than being made. They nearly always focus on great men but the theory, it itself does not claim that only men can be leaders.
