ENDOPLASMIC CANNOT BE SITE THE FOR ENERGY SYNTHESIS OR PRODUCTION.

MORE ABOUT ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM,:-

) ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM:-

STRUCTURE: - 1) The Endoplasmic reticulum has a fine structure and it can be seen with an electron microscope only.

2)  It is a large network of membrane-bound tubes or round bags (vesicles).

3) The endoplasmic reticulum membrane is similar to cell membrane.

4) Depending on the presence of ribosomes, it is of two types – i) Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER)

ii) Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER)

5) Smooth ER doesn’t have ribosomes attached on its surface and is present in liver cells, adipose cells etc. Rough ER has ribosomes attached on its surface and is present in plasma cells, fibroblasts etc.

FUNCTIONS: - 1) Rough ER synthesises proteins whereas Smooth ER synthesises lipids.

2) It provides an increased surface area for metabolic reactions and supports the supporting framework of the cell.

3) It serves as a channel for the transport of materials between regions of the cytoplasm or between cytoplasm and the nucleus.

4) Smooth ER plays a crucial role in detoxifying many poisons and drugs.

5) The synthesised proteins and lipids formed by endoplasmic Reticulum helps in building plasma membrane or cell membrane. This process is known as membrane biogenesis.
