Since ancient times the region below Narmada is considered as Southern India too..

Southern plateau is in the middle of Western ghats, Eastern Ghats and Aravali mountains.
It is divided into two by Narmada flowing from East to West.
The northern part is the central highlands. Southern part is the Deccan Plateau.
