Here is your answer:

Actually both the options are correct.

Because:

1) a × a = a²   Which is definitely true.

2) We know that, -1 × -1 = +1 .

So, -a × -a = (a × -1) (a × -1) = (a × a) (-1 × -1) = a² × 1 = a².

Therefore both the options are true.
