Iodoform test can be performed only on the alcohols having alpha methyl group. The ethanol has methyl group at alpha position but methanol does not have any methyl group at alpha position.  

The reagent for the iodoform test is I₂ and NaOH.

  CH_{3}CH_{2}OH+I_{2}+NaOH    →   CHI_{3}+HCOONa

Where CHI_{3} is iodoform.

    CH_{3}OH+I_{2}+NaOH   →    No reaction

Therefore iodoform test can be useful to distinguish both types of alcohols.
