The solution of alkali metals in liq ammonia has strong reducing properties due to presence of free ammoniated electrons.

Dilute solution is paramagnetic due to presence of unpaired electrons in the cavities in ammoniacal solution. In concentrated solutions, ammoniated electrons associate to form electron pairs and the paramagnetic character decreases.

Solvated electrons and solvated metal ions give blue colour to solution. With increase in the concentration, clusters of metal ions are formed and at very high concentration, the solution becomes colored like that of metallic copper.
