Colonial algae are those in which cells resembles free-swimming unicells which form groups. It may be either large and elaborately interconnected or small and simple.

Coleochaeta is a colonial green alga. It forms a flat thallus, the filaments in Coleochaeta radiate from a central point. Single parietal green chloroplast will be present in each cell.
