The computational activities in hard real-time systems are characterized by stringent timing requirements. The timing requirements have to be fulfilled in all operating conditions in order to guarantee the correct system behaviour. If the application does not complete its function within the allotted time span it may be considered to have failed.

Examples of hard real-time systems include aircraft control systems, anti-lock brakes, components of pacemakers, and nuclear systems.

Soft and Firm real-time systems can miss some deadlines. But eventually their performance will degrade if too many are missed. The sound system in a computer, and seismic sensors are examples of such a system.
