Cereal other than rice and wheat are known as coarse grains.

Jowar, Bajra, Ragi, Maize etc. are examples of coarse grains. These crops are high in calories and have a high nutritional value

• These are majorly used for feeding the animals and aren’t considered as premium grains.
• The coarse harvests are ones which have a hard and uneven surface.
• They are also less polished as compared to the premium crops like wheat and maize.
• They do not require much nutrients i.e., even if they need any it’s not much to be afforded and water to grow i.e., they can grow in less productive areas that receive less rain.
• Although they have been called as coarse grains, they have a very high amount of nutritious content. For example, ragi is very rich in iron, calcium, other nutrients and fiber.
• Jowar is an significant food crop in terms of location and production.
• Bajra cultivates well on sandy soils and shallow dark soils.
