Development of corpus luteum : Secretory phase and increased secretion of FSH

In secretory phase, Corpus luteum is developed from the remaining parts of Graafian follicle. Corpus luteum secretes large amounts of progesterone which is essential for maintenance of endometrium which is thickened by estrogen. In this phase, the endometrium further thickens due to estrogen hormone. LH hormone stimulates the corpus luteum to secrete estrogen and progesterone which inhibit the release of FSH and LH. This phase lasts for 14 days. So, secretion of FSH is decreased during this phase. Due to decreased secretion of FSH, development of new follicles during the secretory phase is prevented.
