Heavy rains can cause disasters for soil on steep slopes. However, careful management of the plants, ground cover plants, mulching and cultivation of terraces can help in preventing it from being washed away.

1. Mulching
A 2- to 3-inch thick layer of compost, manure, leaf mold, and other fine organic matter, wooden chips, when tilled into the soil surface, helps it to stay in place. Mulches add protection, but some work better than others.

Shredded mulches like finely shredded redwood,
mixed fir mulch, and vineyard mulch hold together and help in resisting erosion.

2. Terracing - Cultivation of terraces on slopes are known to be very beneficial in preventing soil erosion.

The terrace walls are known to hold the soil well in place. Terraces with low wooden walls are known to be the best.
