Explanation:

Adsorption

Adsorption at an interface occurs when solute molecules establish interactions with the substrate without establishing covalent bonds. All the interactions described in Chapter 2 may come into play. Adsorption to a solid surface may occur from a gas phase or from a liquid phase. The main control parameters are then the partial pressure or the solution concentration, respectively. Temperature also plays an important role in adsorption processes because the average kinetic energy of the molecules and their collision frequency with the surface increase with the temperature (as already explained in Chapter 1.3). When an adsorbed molecule leaves from the interface, after having been adsorbed there, it undergoes desorption. The material onto which adsorption occurs is the adsorbent and the solute is called the adsorptive before undergoing adsorption and becomes the adsorbate in the adsorbed state.
