There are two types of water hardness, temporary and permanent. Permanent hardness is due to calcium and magnesium nitrates, sulphates, and chlorides etc.

Water is said to have attained hardness if calcium and magnesium carbonates or sulphates have dissolved in it. However, sodium chloride is one salt I know that doesn't cause hardness in water.
