Answer: Spleen is called as the graveyard of red blood cells.
The spleen is an organ which is known to be found in all the vertebrates, which is similar to lymph node in structure. It play an important role with regard to erythrocytes and immune system. Hence, known as the graveyard of red blood cells.
It remove old red blood cells and keep a reserve for blood, which play important role in case of hemorrhagic shock . It metabolize hemoglobin removed from erythrocyte.
The spleen synthesize antibodies and remove antibody- coated bacteria, it play a central role in mononuclear phagocyte system. Absence of it can cause predisposition of certain infections and damaged red blood cells.
