Mitochondria is known as the power house of the cell. It is so, because it carry out the process of aerobic respiration. It also produce energy in the form of ATP.

Mitochondria are known as the powerhouse of the cell. These organelles contain many oxidative enzymes which oxidise food and convert it into energy currency of the cell in the form of ATP (Andenosine triphosphate). This energy (in the form of ATP) is used by body for making new chemical compounds and for doing mechanical work. Due to this reason ,mitochondria are generally referred as 'powerhouse of the cell'.
