Distillation is used to identify and purify organic compounds.Vacuum distillation is distillation at a lower pressure. As the boiling point of a compound is lower at a lower external pressure, the compound will not have to be heated as much as it normally would in order for it to begin boiling.
for example : -
glycerol which decomposes at it's boiling point (563 K) can be distilled without decomposition at 453 K under 12 mm hg pressure.
