The organisation which drafted the bill for proposing the right to information was a social movement commonly known by the name of MKSS.

It was the Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan .

The UPA government under Manmohan singh introduced RTI act in 2005.

This law was passed by Parliament on 15 June 2005 and came fully into force on 12 October 2005.

Information disclosure in India was restricted by the Official Secrets Act 1923 and various other special laws, which the new RTI Act relaxes. It codifies a fundamental right of citizens.

In 1987 the three founding activists of MKSS chose a humble hut in a small and impoverished village Devdungri in the arid state of Rajasthan, as their base to share the life and struggles of the rural poor.
