Organisms which breed only once in their lifetime and then die are called as semelparous organisms. Organisms have a limited amount of energy available for them to use in their lifetime and hence have to divide this energy into different functions based on priority. Now, in semelparous organisms, the mortality rate of offsprings is very high, so it is necessary for them to produce a large no. of offsprings at one go to ensure better survival chances. Since the energy of life source is limited, these organisms prefer producing more offsprings than to live and nourish them hence they use up all their stored energy during reproduction and hence lose their lives.Organisms which breed only once in their lifetime and then die are called as semelparous organisms.
