Many researchers have engineered patterned “seeds” for planting and growing new tissues in the body.

These seeds were constructed by organizing 3 types of human cells into a hydrogel matrix, which were then planted into the animals at the site of the organ with a small damage.

In response to the damage, chemical signals in the animals triggered regeneration of the tissue from the seeds, which later grew on to produce enzymes.

This type of experiment was first conducted for liver tissues in mice. Experiments were also conducted to grow windpipes by this method.

These types of seeds could help in growing new organs from a piece of engineered tissue or seed instead of organ transplantation.
