The overlapping involved in Hcl molecule is "s-pz " overlaps and it tends to form sigma bond.

Let me explain you out...

Electronic configuration of Hydrogen is 1s¹.

For chlorine , 1s² 2s² 2p5 and the box diagram is given in the picture .

It requires 1 electron in 2pz and it bonded with hydrogen to form sigma bond.
