The effects of higher oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of the LDPE caps indicated higher oxygen permeability, followed by synthetic cork, while Saran-Tin showed an extremely low OTR with very low oxygen ingress to the wine. It is normal for natural corks to show greater variability than other closures, particularly in the upright position, simply because they are a product of nature. In the inverted position, the wine can plug capillaries at the cork–glass interface, producing lower and more consistent oxygen transmission than in the upright position.
