The Core part is strong whereas the the outer portion is weak so it gets crumbled and weather. In the process of Weathering the outer portion breaks because it is weak where the core or inner portion get slight damage. The Core part contains different types of ores making it stronger and had much integrity in it. where as in outer portion the ores are weak and just sticked together tight.
