The food is digested in the alimentary canal in the following parts:

1. Mouth: In the mouth, the saliva digests the food. Physical Digestion is carried out by the teeth. Salivary amylase present is saliva digests the  complex sugar present in the food into maltose.

2. Stomach: In the stomach, the gastric juices digest the food. Hydrochloric acid present in the juice kills the bacteria and activates the enzyme pepsin which digests the proteins.

3. Small Intestine: In the small intestine, bile juice secreted by the liver emulsifies the fats and makes the food alkaline so that pancreatic enzymes can act on it. Pancreatic Juice contains three enzymes amylase digests the sugar, trypsin digests the proteins and lipase digests the emulsified fats.

Along with these other intestinal juices digests the food and converts the fats into fatty acids and glycerol, carbohydrates into glucose and proteins into amino acids.
