Fossils also form from molds and casts. If an organism completely dissolves in sedimentary rock, it can leave an impression of its exterior in the rock, called an external mold. If that mold gets filled with other minerals, it becomes a cast.

Mainly, a shell or external hard covering of an organism is preserved in cast and mold fossils.

When a tough hard shell sediments between 2 layers of sedimentary rocks, the upper layer can't enter inside the shell and eventually forms the mold fossil.

Inside the shell all the organic matter dissolves eventually and rock minerals take their place forming the cast fossil.
