Diesel locomotive- today 90%of diesel locomotives are actually diesel electric locomotives. the diesel engine first turns an electric generator (AC/DC).then this electricity is given to traction motors through control panel which in the end powers the wheels. There are some locos with hydraulic transmission making use of torque converters. some hydraulic transmission locos make use of high pressure fluid pump powered by the diesel engine. then this pressurized fluid is fed into hydraulic motors which in turns powers the wheels. The small diesel locomotives have mechanical transmission like our cars and buses.this is how diesel locomotives of all types work.Electric locomotives- the electric locomotives are generally run on AC overhead cable\ third rail. there may be directly DC powered locomotives.but AC are more efficient due to less power losses in transmission. so AC power is first of all collected by one wheelset from rails and by the pentograph from the overhead cable. After this the electricity is stepped down by a step down transformer situated inside the loocomotive. then if we have DC motors then it is also converted to DC electricity by the use of rectifiers. if AC motors are used then it is directly transmitted to them through driver control panel.this is how electric locomotives of all types work
