Part of India to first experience of new agricultural economy was punjab. In Punjab, the British government built a network of irrigational canals to transform semi-desert wasteland into agricultural lands that could grow wheat and cotton for export. Farmers from different parts of Punjab were encouraged to settle here. These settlements were known as canal colonies.
