There is no direct connection from nephron to ureter. Nephrons drain into collecting ducts in the kidney tissue. Collecting ducts drip urine into cuplike receptacles called minor calices. These converge on a few major calices, which drain into a funnel-like renal pelvis. The exit from the renal pelvis (the first component outside of the kidney) is the ureter.
