The medulla oblongata controls breathing, blood pressure, heart rythms and swallowing.Messages to the cortex to the spinal cord are send through the pons and brain system.

as part of the brain system , a section of the lower pons stimulates and controls the intensity of breathing , while a section of the upper pons decreases the depth and frequency of breaths . The pons is also associated with the control of sleep cycles , and controls respirations and reflexes .
