MORE INFORMATION -

The alimentary canal or the digestive canal plays a very important role in our body. It starts from the mouth and ends at anus. It helps in many different processes such as : Chewing, Digestion, Absorption, Assimilation, Excretion, etc.

The first place, The buccal cavity, the food is chewed and mixed with saliva. Saliva is a secretion of salivary glands. The enzyme Salivary amylase is present in saliva which converts starch into sugar.

Then through the oesophagus, the food goes to the stomach. In the stomach, the food is mixed with HCl and gastric juices like pepsin and lypase. Pepsin helps in digestion of proteins and lypase helps in digestion of carbohydrates. HCl makes the environment of the stomach acidic so that the bacterias are killed and it also helps in proper digestion of the food. Mucous is present at the walls of the stomach, it helps as a barrier for the walls to protect it from the actions of HCl.

The food is then passed to small intestine. In the Initial part of small intestine which is also called as duodenum, the food is mixed with bile and pancreatic juice. The bile is produced by liver and helps in the break down of fats into fatty acids. It also makes the acidic medium of the food into basic. The pancreatic juice is secreted by pancreas and it helps in the digestion of sugars, fats, and starches.

Further in the small intestine, the food is more digested more with the help of intestinal juices. The intestinal juices helps in the digestion of proteins and fats.

After digestion, the process of Absorption and Assimilation occurs with the help of villi, finger like projections present in the small intestine.

Further, the food goes into large intestine, where the water from the food is absorbed making the un-digested food in the form of semi-solid. The un-digested food is stored in rectum and removed through anus.
