The part(s) of the ear when

(i) gymnast performs various balancing feats: Inner ear

(ii) you hear a song: Outer, middle and inner ear

Explanation:

The ear is the organ of hearing and balance in human beings.

For hearing:

  • Outer ear: Pinna collects the sound waves that are channeled through the ear canal.
  • Middle ear: The sound waves impacts the eardrum causing its vibrations which are transmitted through the ossicles (three bones – malleus, incus and stapes) finally causing the vibrations of the oval window.
  • In the inner ear, cochlea receives these vibrations whose sensory cells carry the signals to the temporal lobe of the brain where they are processed as sound.

For balance

Static (while stationary) and dynamic (moving) balance is the carried out by the highly specific parts of the inner ear. They are:

  • The two ventricles utricle and saccule (for static)
  • Semicircular canals (for dynamic) that are at right angles to each other. The nerve endings of the vestibulocochlear nerve transmitts the impulses to the brain.
