This is because sand is insoluble in water. And sodium chloride is highly soluble in water. So, by using filter paper( THROUGH FILTRATION), the insoluble sand particles are left on paper while the salt waters sweeps down in the container.
The sand particles are big, heavier than water and so this is another why it is left behind on the paper
