It is difficult to say exactly whether a two party or a multi-party system is good for a democracy.Party system is not something any country can choose. It evolves over a long time, depending on the nature of society, itssocial and regional divisions, its history of politics and its system of elections.

For example, if India has evolved a multi-party system, it is because the social and geographical diversity in such a large country is not easily absorbed by two or even three parties. But in Britain and U.S.A there exists two party system where democracy is running smoothly.

But for India two party system would have been a failure. But multi-party system appears to be very messy and may lead to political instability.

Any democratic system must allow at least two parties to compete in elections and provide a fair chance for the competing parties to come to power.
