Actually, this depends on how you want to shade, if you want consistent but light shade, prefer using 2b or 4b. However, if you want dark shade, prefer using 6b or 7b.
It also depends on how much area you have to shade, if you have to shade an entire Large size painting, then shading with 2b or 4b may feel troublesome.

If you are good at shading use all the types of pencils accordingly. Believe me ! This will make your painting appear more realistic....
