Light is defined as a transverse electromagnetic wave. Due to this nature, light can travel through a vacuum. Earlier studies were conducted based on diffraction and interference phenomenon which showed light to be a sort of disturbance.

However, the true transversal nature of light waves was proved only by the Polarization phenomenon. This phenomenon helps to specify the geometrical orientation of the oscillations.
