  • The first leader of Mauryan Dynasty was Chandragupta Maurya. Chandragupta started centralizing land as Alexander the Great’s power began to wane.
  • Alexander’s demise in 323B.C.E. left a large dominion vacuum, which Chandragupta took advantage. He accumulated an army and overthrew the Nanda power in Magadha, in present day eastern India, kickstart the Mauryan Empire.
  • After crowning himself as a king Chandragupta took further lands through force and by forming alliances.
  • Chandragupta’s chief minister was Kautilya, occasionally known as Chanakya, who counselled Chandragupta and contributed to the empire’s heritage. In addition to being a political strategist, Chanakya is also well known for writing the Arthashastra, a composition about leadership and government.
  • Bindusara, Chandragupta’s son, took over the throne around 300 B.C. He kept the empire running easily while keeping up its lands. Bindusara’s son, Ashoka, was the third leader of the Mauryan Empire.
  • Ashoka left his mark on history by raising large stone pillars inscribed with edicts that he published.
  • After leading a bloody crusade against Kalinga, Ashoka re estimated his commitment to amplifying the empire and rather turned to Buddhism and its tenet of nonviolence.
  • Numerous of his edicts inspirited people to give up violence and live in peace with each other.
  • After Ashoka’s demise, his family continued to control, but the empire began to break apart. The last of the Mauryas, Brihadratha, was assassinated by his commanding officer in chief Pushyamrita who went on to set up the Shunga Dynasty in 185 B.C.
