A velocity - time graph is a graphical representation of the relationship of the velocity of an object(plotted against the y or vertical axis)  against the time it takes( the time is plotted on the x-axis).

In a velocity time graph:

1) The slope of the graph gives the acceleration of the body. Finding the slope of the graph gives its acceleration.

2) The area under the velocity time graph gives the displacement of the object.

It is mathematically possible to calculate the displacement of an object from the velocity time graph.

The area under the velocity time graph when calculated, gives the distance an object has traveled. 

The area is calculated only for the space that is found in between the line graph and the time axis.
