The Kalang community belonged to Java in Indonesia. They were a group of talented forest cutters and shifting cultivators. They were extremely significant and without their skill, it would have been exceptionally hard to gather teak and for the rulers to construct their royal residences.
Java, lying amongst Sumatra and Bali, is a volcano-dotted island that is at the geographic and monetary focus of Indonesia, and home to more than half its people. Java's biggest city is present day, sprawling Jakarta, the country's capital.
