India, Africa were two places of immense significance for colonial powers, though there were other places (southeast Asia) too, but India and Africa due to to resources, labour and wealth were of immense significance for colonial powers

Explanation:

  • The reasons for colonization were mainly political, religious, and economic. At the time of colonization, an economic depression was taking place in Europe, and powerful nations such as Great Britain, France, Germany, were losing money
  • The search for India's richness and prosperity led to colonization. Trading rivalries between European sailing powers brought other European powers to India. Europe was exercising both conquest and trade, particularly in spices. In the early 17th century trading posts were established in India by  the Dutch, England, France and Denmark-Norway. When the Mughal empire disintegrated at the beginning of the 18th century, and the Maratha empire collapsed after Panipat's third war, many relatively weak and insecure Indian states were increasingly open to European influence by Indian based rulers.
  • By the middle of the century almost entire India had been dominated by the British directly or indirectly. British India consisted of the most populated and important parts of the British empire, consisting of British Presidencies and Colonies under direct control, and was regarded as the "jewel of the British crown."
  • Africa had plenty of raw materials that Europe could use to make money. Europeans could easily buy commodities such as gold, rubber, ivory, palm oil, cotton,  gum, and wood,  because of cheap African labour. Due to the advent of the industrial revolution these goods became more significant. The conquest of Africa was also a product of European rivalry where, since the Hundred Years' War, Britain and France had been in dispute. Those countries took part in a competition to gain more territories in Africa, but it was a free competition for all European countries.
  • Besides, Southeast Asia too were colonised by the Europeans, the US, and the Japanese, that is, around 7 colonial powers in Southeast Asia: Spain, Portugal, Great Britain, the Netherlands,  the US, and Japan. From the 1500s--1940s, colonialism was imposed over South-East Asia
  • South- east Asia colonialism had three motives: political, economic and cultural. There were several reasons for colonialism: expanding territory, finding business benefit, importing cheap goods and extracting precious metals. The booming economies needed a secure supply of raw materials, new markets and new investment sites.
