The meristematic tissues or meristems in a plant always remain in an active metabolic state.
The reason for the forever active state is that the cells in these tissues never age and keep dividing continuously. This continues until the plant finally dies out. The portion of the cell that continues to remain inside the meristem after division is known as an initial, whereas the other portion is called derivative.
