The divide and rule was one of the most effective policies adopted by the British to acquire political superiority over the subcontinent. As we know there were a large number of princely states in India. The Britishers would go to a king and would mentally make him ready to make a war against some other state. The British provided even the military assistance to the kings to do that. Finally when the other state was defeated they would share the region and gain control over it.
The 2nd aspect of divide and rule was to divide Indians on the basis of religions and caste. They were successful in creating a difference between the Hindus and the Muslims of India which ultimately led to the partition of the country at the time of Independence. Also in 1905 when Lord Curzon was the Viceroy of India, he decided to partition Bengal. At that time Bengal was the largest province of India with parts of Assam and a major portion of today’s Bangladesh included in its territories. The partition was made in such a way that East Bengal with Dacca(Dhaka) as it's capital had Muslim majority and West Bengal with Calcutta as it's capital had Hindu majority.
All though the Bengali people had realised this and strongly opposed the partition which was finally annulled in 1911
Thus they would raise differences in the people's mind so the people would fight amongst themselves which created an easy path for the British to gain political supremacy.
