The policy of Doctrine of Lapse
Explanation:
- The British's territorial annexation policy had resulted in the displacement of a number of leaders, chiefs, & rulers. The strong implementation of the policies of "the Subsidiary Alliance" & "the Doctrine of Lapse" provoked anger amongst the governing segments of society.
- The ruling class had disliked by Lord Dalhousie's Doctrine of Lapse policy because it restricted the rulers' rights of adoption. Because of this policy, the British did not recognize Damodar Rao (the adopted son of Rani Laxmibai, as the legitimate heir of Jhansi).
- Rani Lakshmibai, dissatisfied with the injustice, also appealed to a London court that had dismissed her petition. Rani Lakshmi Bai became the British's bitter enemy & resulted in the revolt in the respective territories.
