Minamata disease was first revealed in Minamata city in Kumamoto prefecture, Japan, in the year 1956.
It was caused by the discharge of methylmercury in the industrial wastewater from the Chisso Corporation's chemical factory, which continued from the year 1932 to the year 1968.
Overall, 900 people died and 2,266 people were certified as having directly gone through from mercury poisoning.
