The Jawaharlal Nehru Port – commonly known as the JNPT or the Nhava Sheva Port, was developed to ease the load on Mumbai Port. It is located to the east of Mumbai Port in Navi Mumbai and accessed by way of the Thane Creek. The Nhava Sheva Port is the largest container handling port in India, handling about 55% of the country’s container traffic and was established in 1989.
The Mumbai Port (earlier known as the Bombay Port) was established in 1873.
